Explore the William G. Mather Steamship in Cleveland: 100 Years of History

A Family Day Aboard the William G. Mather Steamship

My family and I recently spent the day exploring the William G. Mather Steamship, and it was like stepping back into a living piece of Cleveland history. We had so much fun wandering through the many rooms, testing out the old phones, spinning the ship’s wheel, and imagining what life must have been like for the crew. Every space had something new to discover. From the captain’s quarters to the boiler room we walked all around and through the ship.

Views from the Top and Cleveland Waterfront Fun

Once we made it up to the top deck, we were greeted with an incredible view of Lake Erie, North Coast Yard, and the Cleveland skyline. We watched small boats glide across the water and enjoyed the fresh lake breeze while taking in the stunning scenery. It was the perfect reminder of just how special Cleveland’s lakefront is, especially in the summer.

100 Years of the William G. Mather

The William G. Mather Steamship, a 618-foot Great Lakes freighter built in 1925, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Restored to its former glory, the ship offers a chance to see everything from its massive cargo holds to the elegant brass and oak pilot house.

This season also features Steam & Steel: Propelling the Future of the Great Lakes, an exhibit that dives into the history and future of Great Lakes shipping through interactive displays, historic artifacts, and hands on activities. Whether you’re a history lover, a Cleveland local, or just looking for a unique family outing, this is an experience worth having.
