Book a movie ticket online to Anime Theater!

  • The goal is to create an app where users can book movie tickets for a movie theater.

  • The target audience includes anime fans, film connoisseurs and those looking for fun activities in New York City.

  • I sent users the following tasks that align with the project goal:

    1) Book theater tickets

    2) View your profile settings

  • Users expressed difficulty distinguishing what the navigation icons meant, so I added the names under the icons to improve.

Users did not complete the flow successfully when all icons are the same size, so I made the theater icon slightly larger so the users' focus is drawn to the main function of the app.

  • I drew inspiration from popular movie theater apps such as Fandango, AMC Theaters and Regal. I noticed how nearly every movie has a poster photo as opposed to just the title. I incorporated this into the design as it will allow the user to visually see every showtime.

You can see the apps I was inspired by below.

  • In my initial sketches, I incorporated the hamburger menu so users would be able to see their options on a smaller screen. Upon further research I learned that options in the hamburger menu have low discoverability and are better suited for secondary navigation, so I put the main navigation at the bottom of the screen.

You can see my initial sketches below.

  • It was difficult to recruit participants that fit the target audience for the usability study.

  • The users I tested could not complete the flow because they could not find the navigation buttons in the hamburger menu.

During this project, I learned the importance of intuitive navigation and that hamburger menus aren't always the best choice for smaller screens.
